About Gavin Ashworth

Gavin Ashworth is an Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Technology at International University Canada, where he teaches and mentors students across the School of Education. His academic work focuses on online learning design, examining how courses and learning experiences are structured specifically for online delivery to maximize student engagement, comprehension, and successful completion.

Throughout his academic career, Gavin Ashworth has developed a teaching approach that treats online course design as a distinct discipline requiring its own principles, rather than simply transferring traditional classroom materials into a digital format. He encourages students to understand how online learners interact differently with course content compared to in-person students, and to design accordingly.

In his courses, Gavin Ashworth draws on online course design case studies, instructional design frameworks specific to digital learning, and current research in online student engagement to help students build practical course design skills. Students explore topics such as online course structure and pacing, strategies for fostering online student engagement and community, multimedia content design for online learning, and methods for assessing learning effectively in online environments.

As an Associate Professor within the Department of Educational Technology, Gavin Ashworth also contributes to curriculum planning that prepares students to design effective online learning experiences across different subject areas and student populations. He works closely with colleagues across the School of Education to ensure that coursework reflects current best practices in online course design and digital pedagogy.

Gavin Ashworth places particular emphasis on helping students understand the unique challenges online learners face, including potential isolation and the need for clear self-directed learning structures, recognizing that successful online course design must actively address these challenges. He designs coursework that encourages students to build engagement and support mechanisms directly into course design.

Recognizing that many of his students are working professionals studying online themselves, Gavin Ashworth structures his courses with accessible design frameworks, clear examples of effective online course structures, and consistent opportunities for applied discussion. His approach to online teaching emphasizes practicing the very online design principles being taught.

Students who study under Gavin Ashworth often highlight his ability to make online course design feel both creative and grounded in solid pedagogical principles. His long-term goal as an educator is to help students develop the design skills needed to support careers in online education, instructional design, and digital learning program development.
