Helena Mackay is a Professor in the Department of TESOL at International University Canada, where she teaches and mentors students across the School of Education. Her academic work focuses on TESOL program leadership and policy, examining how language education programs are structured, funded, and evaluated at institutional and governmental levels across different countries and educational systems.

Throughout her academic career, Helena Mackay has developed a teaching approach that connects classroom-level TESOL practice with the broader policy decisions that shape language education access and quality at scale. She encourages students to understand TESOL work not only as classroom teaching but as a field shaped by significant policy and resource decisions affecting millions of language learners worldwide.

In her courses, Helena Mackay draws on TESOL program case studies, language education policy frameworks, and current research in language program evaluation to help students understand the leadership and policy dimensions of TESOL work. Students explore topics such as language program funding and resource allocation, TESOL teacher certification standards, language education policy across different national contexts, and strategies for evaluating program quality and effectiveness at scale.

As a Professor within the Department of TESOL, Helena Mackay plays a leading role in shaping curriculum that prepares students for leadership roles within language education programs and policy organizations. She works closely with colleagues across the School of Education to ensure that coursework reflects current debates in TESOL program leadership and language education policy.

Helena Mackay is particularly committed to mentoring students who aspire to leadership roles within TESOL programs, helping them develop the strategic and policy analysis skills required to lead language education initiatives at an institutional or systemic level. She designs coursework that combines policy theory with practical case-based program leadership exercises.

Recognizing that many of her students are working professionals studying online, Helena Mackay structures her courses with accessible policy case studies, clear leadership frameworks, and consistent opportunities for applied discussion. Her approach to online teaching emphasizes developing the kind of strategic, policy-minded thinking needed for leadership roles in language education.

Students who study under Helena Mackay often highlight her ability to connect classroom TESOL practice with genuine program leadership and policy understanding. Her long-term goal as an educator is to help students develop the strategic vision and leadership capability needed to advance into senior roles within language education programs and TESOL policy organizations.
